Why Keto Is A Bad Idea
And why you’re better off never trying It.
Picture this, you’ve just stumbled across a magic diet known as keto and you hear that it can use fat as a fuel source. It literally melts fat right off your body and all you have to do is stop eating carbs, eat less protein and copious amounts of fat. Finally, a for you to achieve the results you want, get rid of that stubborn fat once and for all and look good on the beach. You decide “what the hell, I’ll give it a go, Summer’s 4 months away what have I got to lose”?
The first week goes horribly and you experience what they call “keto flu”, you have major headaches and brain fog, but you keep your willpower strong and push through the struggle. After the first week, you notice that your weight has gone down by 5 pounds. “WOW, 5 pounds in one week”? This is great. You realise that keto does work like people say it does and you stick to it until you can get all of your weight off.
A few months go by and you’ve successfully lost 50 pounds, congratulations! Summer is here, all of that hard work and effort has paid off and you can look in the mirror and be proud of your body. You spend the rest of Summer maintaining what you’ve achieved and looking good on the beach, you feel confident in your body and girls are noticing.
Summer is over and the question is now what? What are you going to do after you’ve lost the weight? Are you going to go back to your normal way of eating? Well, you can’t do that because that’s what got you fat in the first place. You can’t stay on keto long term because that means you’re going to have to give up all of the social aspects you enjoyed. No more drinking, going out with friends and family for lunches and dinners, no more Thanksgiving potatoes because you can’t eat the same food as them.
You’re going to be stuck in this trap that I see all too many guys experience. Once they lose the weight they don’t know how to keep it off and eventually it gets too hard, too frustrating and they go back to their “old ways” and put weight back on.
This is why I highly suggest that unless you’re a diabetic, unless you suffer from epilepsy or unless you have a specific medical condition that doesn’t allow you to use carbohydrates properly you should not be doing the keto diet. Giving up the joys of food and alcohol for the rest of your life is not worth living because food brings people together. It’s more than just what goes in your body, it’s there to signify something. Maybe it’s a birthday, maybe it’s a wedding, maybe it’s going on a date with a girl, whatever it is foods going to play a role in that and you can either enjoy yourself or you can be the “odd one out” and sit down and eat your fried cheese poured over pork rinds. What are you going to do when you go on a date with a girl and you say uh yea can i just get deep fried cheese with a side of butter?
Stop Playing The Impatience Game.
I know how frustrating it is to be embarrassed when you wake up in the morning and look at your gut hanging over your pants, I know how crappy it feels to suck your gut in all the time so you don’t look as fat, because I’ve been exactly where you are. That doesn’t mean you need to do something radical to change that. You have to make a change but it doesn’t need to be something so far fetched that will give you the short-term results you’re after but negatively affect you in the long term.
Keto does work for the impatient people I mean it works so well that people are changing their god damn instagram name to “barry_doesketo” or “ketobro117” and you see the progress they’re making. While you will make progress, it’s not sustainable and you don’t want to put in months of time and effort trying to “keto” your way to fat loss and then come to a standstill when you finally lose the weight because you aren’t sure what to do next.
Ask yourself the question, is what I’m currently doing right now, is the food i’m eating, is the exercise program I’m doing sustainable for the next 5 years? Because if it’s not then you need to take another approach.
Anyone can lose weight by following keto or any other diet but the key is to be able to keep it off long-term.
If you can’t see yourself following a diet for the next 5 years then you need to try something different because eventually, you will find one and when you do find one it’s going to be much easier to stick. If you can lose 50 pounds and then not regain it for the rest of your life and you can live 50 pounds lighter, then that is the best thing you can ask for because when you do that, you don’t have to stress about putting the weight back on, then you don’t have to obsess over every meal, then you don’t have to give up your “lifestyle” to keep the weight off.
So What Do You Do?
The first step is bringing awareness to those foods that cause you to overeat. It’s not just carbs, it’s refined food that contains carbohydrates and fats. It’s usually food like doughnuts, and pastries and chips, those foods you know you shouldn’t be eating. Then you get rid of those foods from your house. If you’re an ice cream fiend you get rid of all the ice cream. If you love lays potato chips then you keep those fucking chips out of the house.
Any food that triggers you to overeat and go overboard should be kept out of the house because they are going to be the biggest contributors that stop you from losing weight.
From there you need to find foods that fill you up and you can eat constantly. For some people that may be steak and for others it may be fish. Find the foods that you can keep eating over and over again that you actually enjoy. Stop trying to look for new recipes every week because let’s be honest, if you’re not a good cook and if you don’t want to spend hours in the kitchen it’s a waste of time.
Once you have those staple foods that are going to keep you full and you can alternate between you stick to that for a few weeks and you see how your body responds.
If you notice you start to lose weight then you’ve just found something that may be sustainable for a long time. Being able to adhere to good nutrition 80% of the time and then have a few beers with your buddies or a tinder date on Friday night isn’t going to affect you or your lifestyle.
If your weight isn’t going down then you may need to cut something else out, maybe you’re having a bit too much rice, maybe you’re adding too much oil to your dishes. Start changing those little things until you notice weight loss.
This isn’t going to happen overnight but the more you practice and see what does and doesn’t work for you the easier it’s going to be for you to eventually put together your own diet that’s easy to stick to, keeps you full and allows you to still enjoy your social life on the weekend.
