The Top Ten Reasons Intermittent Fasting Really Works (And Why You Need To Try It)

Intermittent Fasting can be a game changer because makes losing fat much easier than any other method.

I’ve been following Intermittent Fasting since 2012 and it’s the best decision I’ve ever made. Today I’m going to share with you why it works so well not only for your life, but also what the science has to say…

But first, all the mistakes I made along the way. I made them, but you don’t have to.

I started trying to lose fat when I was 16. There wasn’t any special reason for doing it. I wanted to look good with my shirt off on the beach and pick up girls. So, I did what most guys do, I decided to join a local gym. Every day after school I’d be in there training.

After a few months of putting in so much effort, I was feeling deflated by my lack of progress, I couldn’t figure out what I was doing wrong.

Feeling frustrated, I thought the best thing would be to speak to the local supplement store owner. I told him my problem “I want to lose weight and gain muscle” so he suggested I buy some whey protein, a post-workout shake and a meal plan to follow. It was the typical “bodybuilding” diet of eating six small meals a day. This sounded excessive but I decided to give it a try.

For the next year, I was trying to fit six small meals a day into my life and it was harder than I thought. Trying to eat during class, during work and when I was with friends was a pain in the ass. I hated carrying Tupperware with me everywhere and it just made eating a hassle.

After a year of weighing all of my food, obsessing with the food scale, and carrying around a cooler bag, I was ready to quit. I started researching other methods of losing fat and gaining muscle and that’s when I came across Intermittent Fasting.

It went against the grain of what was recommended at the time but I decided to give it a go because I thought anything can be better than what I’m doing now.

When I first tried it, It was like the sorting hat knew I was destined for Gryffindor all along. I was able to eat less frequently, not carry food around with me wherever I went and was able to get the leanest I had ever been.

Here’s Why.

#1: IF Help With Self- Control

One of the real reasons I follow Intermittent Fasting is because it helps me practice self-control.

When you say that you’re not eating for a certain period of time, that’s it. You just don’t eat. After 6 pm, you don’t put any food in my mouth, period. Having that black and white rule of just saying no can help resist the temptation and snacking on food at night.

The problem for most guys isn’t when they’re not eating, it’s during the feeding window itself.

As soon as they can eat, it’s like the shields over Hogwarts have been broken and like a death eater, you’re hungry for blood and it’s very hard to control how much food you eat. Sometimes you can get so ravenous and you can’t seem to stop yourself from just pigging out.

The same thing happened to me, I developed a bad relationship with food when I was younger and first started “dieting like a bodybuilder”. I’d weigh every meal on my food scale and track everything I put into my mouth. I fell into the “strict clean eating” trap and used to restrict myself from “bad foods.” Because IF shortens your eating window which and gives you a smaller time frame to eat, you’re less likely to eat as much food which will then put you in a calorie deficit and thus result in weight loss.

#2: An Acute Increase in Human Growth Hormone (HGH) ⁣⁣

Growth hormone is what exactly what it sounds like, something that makes humans grow. It’s what is pumping through kids and teenagers as they grow into adults. It fuels muscle growth, bone growth, tissue repair and a whole lot more. When you practice fasting and you increase your HGH you’re signalling your muscles to grow and your bones to get stronger.

#3: IF Is Convenient.

Fasting makes it more convenient to lose fat by eating fewer, but larger meals and staying in a caloric deficit. You get to decide when you’re going to eat and when you’re not going to eat. If you’ve got to fast longer than normal because you’ve got a meeting then that’s what you do.

You don’t have to rely on trying to eat every 3 hours and force yourself to be eating food all day. It is also very convenient for the days you go out with friends on the weekend because you can fast for longer and then break your fast at night when you go out.

#4: IF Decreases Insulin Resistance⁣

Do you love carbs? Good, because so do I. When you go for longer periods of time without food your body is more sensitive to carbs. This Means when you do have them (specifically after a workout) your body is going to suck the carbs up and push them into the muscles. This helps you grow and repair as opposed to being stored as fat.

#5: IF Allows Flexibility.

In essence, you can eat some of your favourite (even unhealthy) foods and stay in a caloric deficit. When you only have a few hours to eat 2,000 calories, those 2,000 are going to go a long way and you’re not going to be able to eat all 2,000 calories from “clean food”.

This is why I like the 80/20 approach.

80% of calories should come from whole nutritious foods that are going to give you nutrients, make you feel good, give you energy, and fuel your body for the right type of activity, fat loss, and muscle building.

20% of calories be going out, enjoying yourself, eating something that you love. It could be a bottle of beer or two, it could be a few slices of pizza. Basically, when you follow Intermittent Fasting you don’t give up the foods you love.

# 6: IF Resets Hunger Signals.

You’ll learn how to stop eating out of habit or boredom. You will notice what true hunger feels like and how often you realise you’re not hungry at all. Following a 16 hour fasting period or even longer is going to completely change the way you act and feel about food. Hunger cravings aren’t going to randomly pop up and you’re going to notice that you might go longer without foods without feeling those “ pains.

#7: IF Increases Cellular Repair

Your cells will break down and repair faster which could mean all of the bad cells you have in your body will slowly be killed off and replaced with new healthy cells. Healthier cells will help you push harder in the gym, recover quicker after a workout and make you function better as a human being.

#8: IF Reduces Oxidative Stress and inflammation in the Body⁣⁣

When your body isn’t eating food it has a chance to go into repair mode. Since it doesn’t have to focus on digestion it can focus on other things like reducing inflammation, killing off bad cells, fighting off pathogens and diseases and much more. Think about the time you’re not eating is helping your body repair, get stronger and become more resistant and harder to kill.

#9: IF Decreases Food Related Stress

No more carrying Tupperware, bro. No more waking up early in the morning to prep your food for the day. Because you’re having less frequent meals and bigger size portions, those 3 or 4 containers turn into one big container. That morning meal you’re trying to stuff yourself with because you run out the door turns into a black cup of coffee as you waltz out of the house without a care in the world.

#10: If Allows You To Date Normally!

 

The last thing you want to do is go on a date and order something weird or turn down sushi because you’re trying to “avoid carbs”. With Intermittent Fasting, you have the flexibility of going wherever you want on a date and order what you want without stressing out. You can just fast up until the meal, order some good food, have a few drinks with your date and then get right back on track afterwards without it “ruining your diet”.

My dating life was so much easier when I didn’t have to stress about food or take a girl to a place that had chicken and veggies.

Bonus Tip: IF Gives Your Your Digestive System⁣⁣ Beneficial Breaks

Sometimes you just need to take a break from food. If you’re shovelling food into your gut every few hours, you’re never giving your stomach a rest. When you practice Intermittent Fasting and allowing your digestive system to recover it’s going to help you with a few things. It will help decrease the chances of you being constipated.

It will help improve your digestion when you actually eat food, it will reduce your bloating and when you don’t eat for 16 hours you’re going to look a lot leaner since there’s no food in your stomach.
