Why does food matter?

You want to get lean right?

That’s one of the reasons you go to the gym. I mean that’s not the only reason you go to the gym but it’s one of the main reasons and there’s nothing wrong with that.

You want to look fit and healthy and you want to get rid of that stubborn belly fat.

I know how hard you push yourself when you’re in the gym too because you’re like most of us guys when we have a goal.

We sip on our coffee or pre workout and have a plan for the next 45 – 60 minutes while we’re in the gym we want to push ourselves as hard as we can.

Whether that be a weight training session or an HIIT workout we come in willing to give it our all because we don’t want to waste our time and we’re on a mission to reach our goal.

After months and months of putting in all of this hard work at the gym you’re not seeing the results you want. You still have that stubborn belly fat and those love handles, so what gives?

The Hard Truth

It doesn’t matter how hard you’re pushing yourself in the gym if you aren’t eating right.

You may have heard the saying that you can’t outrun a bad diet and it’s so true.

Think about this, if you really pushed yourself as hard as you can for an hour maybe you could burn 5 – 600 calories at best if you’re lucky. Usually, you would burn 2 – 300 calories from an hour of HIIT training.

You’ve just burnt all of those calories in a hard hours work and then you decide to buy a muffin on the way home, or you’ve had 3 flat whites today. Well, that’s just undone all of that hard work and those calories you’ve just burnt in that one-hour session.

Yes, that’s the facts about nutrition and working out. You can spend a whole hour or more pushing it hard at the gym and undo it in less than 5 minutes by eating a god damn muffin.

This is why I always tell my clients that you MUST focus on eating more than anything else if you’re trying to lose belly fat. You don’t want all of your hard effort to go to waste, spending an hour in the gym chasing results that never come because you’re not focusing on the more important thing which is your diet.

What do you do?

In order to actually lose stubborn belly fat, you have to burn more calories than you consume during the day plain and simple. So that means if you burn 2200 calories a day you need to eat less than that in order to lose weight. A good way to determine how much you burn on average is to look up in google: TDEE calculator which will help you figure out roughly how many calories you burn every day.

Once you figure out how many calories you’re burning you then want to reduce that number by 10 – 15%. So if you burn 2200 calories a day, you would want to divide that by 10 – 15% and that would give you 1780  – 1670 calories a day. That’s how many calories you should be eating every single day in order for you to start losing weight.

Now that you know how much you need to be eating, how do you know what food and how much food that is? A great way to figure this out is to start tracking your food using a food journal or even better, an app like www.myfitnesspal.com. This is going to allow you to see what type of nutrients your food is made up of (protein, fats and carbohydrates) and also how many calories you’re consuming throughout the day.

This will surprise you with some of the foods you enter because they’re going to contain a lot more calories than you thought they would and you’re going to become aware of just how many calories you’re eating on a daily basis.

You will notice how many calories beer and alcohol have and how many calories are in those three daily flat whites you have plus the afternoon chocolate and late night ice cream. It all ads up very quickly…

Awareness is the key

Once you become aware of much you’re really eating you’re then going to be able to make adjustments and see what you need to cut out. When you aren’t aware of how much you’re eating during the day it’s hard to make the changes because you’re not sure where to start.

You don’t have to do this forever but it’s a good practice to help you realise where you need to make changes.

Conclusion

While working out is so crucial for helping burn stubborn belly fat and building lean muscles it’s only the small part of the equation. 80% of your results are going to come from your diet hands down. Remember, one hour of hard work can be undone within 5 minutes of having a food craving and snacking on a chocolate muffin. So start tracking what you’re eating, figure out how much food you should be eating daily and then eliminate all of the crap that’s holding you back from the results you want. There’s not much more to it than that, a lot of people are trying to sell you the secret formula by buying their supplements and it’s a load of BS. Focus on what truly matters and you will get the results you want.
